What is a vascular center?
Near Bentonville, AR, we are a team of experts dedicated to treating conditions of your vascular system, also known as your circulatory system.
The circulatory system includes arteries, veins, and their connecting capillaries that carry blood toward and away from your heart. This system is important, but it isn’t infallible. Let’s take a look at some of the problems that may arise in your vascular system.
Artery Care
Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart throughout the body; the pulmonary artery is the only exception, transporting deoxygenated blood to the lungs for oxygenation.
Usually arterial diseases develop as we age because of an accumulation of plaque, cholesterol, and other elements that cause blockages that worsen over time and cut off blood supply to the muscle. This can cause:
- Aneurysms – When the wall of an artery weakens, swells, and stretches
- Occlusive Disease – The main vessel in your body narrows as plaque accumulates, leading to blockage.
- Carotids Artery Disease – When plaque develops in the neck from a build-up of calcium, cholesterol, and fatty substances.
- May-Thurner Syndrome – This rare issue usually only affects females between the ages of 20 and 45 after a period of immobilization or after pregnancy. If left untreated, this condition may become more serious. This occurs in the left leg after the left iliac vein becomes compressed and flattened, causing the vein walls to narrow.
- Peripheral Artery Disease – also known as PAD, accumulating plaque thickens artery linings, decreasing the artery’s diameter and restricting blood flow, thus reducing circulation to essential body parts.
Arterial diseases affecting the legs can cause problems walking, delayed wound healing, leg hair loss, bluish or purple skin, and cold legs. You could also develop gangrene.
We have many treatment options for artery care, including either prescriptions, or surgical options.
Vein Care
Your veins are blood vessels that use the pressure created by your heart’s pumping to work against gravity and carry most of the blood in your body from your tissues and organs back to the heart. At our vascular center near Bentonville, AR, we can treat varicose veins and spider veins.
- Varicose Veins – blood flowing backward and pooling causes these underlying veins to bulge and become visible. They may be asymptomatic, or accompanied by swelling, itching, restless legs, heaviness, and pain.
- Spider Veins – although these veins are smaller, they are still noticeable because they appear like red, blue, or purple lines that resemble a cobweb just under the skin. Unless they occur with varicose veins, they remain painless. Most people seek treatment for spider veins because their appearance bothers them.
Usually treatment for veins involves closing the diseased veins and allowing the body to reroute the blood to the connected healthy veins automatically.

Here are a few preventative actions you can take to improve your vascular system:
Exercise
Exercises like walking can elevate your heart rate and promote blood flow, which prevents plaque buildup. This also helps you maintain a healthy weight. Remember to start slow and work your way up to more intense workouts, if you’re interested.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
Obesity puts you at risk for arterial diseases because excess weight can cause high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol.
Quit Tobacco
Smoking increases your risk of arterial diseases because it can cause plaque buildup in the arteries. We know that quitting immediately isn’t always successful, but if you reach out to us we can find counseling, meditation, and medical supervision resources to help you stop.
Better Dietary Choices
We recommend cutting back on red meat and dairy and replacing them with more fruits and vegetables. Plaque buildup can stem from eating foods high in cholesterol. We also recommend smaller portions to reduce the stress on your circulatory system.
Manage Stress
Stress takes a toll on your body, and many people overeat or smoke in order to cope. Luckily, physical activity is one way to help manage stress.
Regular Screenings
Testing your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and your risk of developing type 2 diabetes can help you understand your body. It’ll give you the necessary tools to make lifestyle adjustments so you can become a healthier version of yourself.
