Mediport Placement Procedure

Venous access ports inserted by a vascular expert

Dr. Stout has many years of experience with placing mediports for any type of treatment, offering quick, comfortable insertion in our office based lab.

Mediports are used for many different treatments, but they are particularly beneficial a patient who needs one. These ports are used for long-term antibiotic use to treat infections, chemotherapy treatments, drawing blood, dialysis, and IV therapy.

A mediport prevents a patient from being stuck with a needle countless times during ongoing treatment where venous access is needed.

Mediports are inserted under the skin, usually on the upper right side of the patients’ chest.

The device consists of a small circular septum that has a silicone top so medications can be inserted into a catheter tube leading directly to a vein. This also is used to draw blood out of the same septum area.

Pre-Procedure

Our team will begin by confirming that you are a good candidate for a mediport procedure in Rogers, Arkansas. This includes checking your kidney function, blood tests, and reviewing the medications you take regularly. Assuming everything aligns and an appointment is made, we will have you discontinue and blood thinners temporarily, and fast before your procedure. Anesthesia is given so that you're conscious but have no memory of the procedure.

Inserting the Mediport

Dr. Stout will use general anesthetic to numb the surgical sites, typically on the right side of the chest. He continuously monitors his location with x-ray imaging throughout the procedure. A small incision is made to access the vein, and another incision is made where the port will be inserted just beneath the skin. At this point, Dr. Stout connects the port to the vein with a catheter. Once he confirms it's placed correctly, he stitches up the incisions and the procedure is complete.

Post-Procedure

We will temporarily keep you in a private room to monitor you while the anesthesia wears off. We suggest keeping bandages over the incision sites for the next few days as they heal. Avoid heavy lifting until we clear you, but otherwise this is a very simple procedure with minimal to no downtime.

Dr. Haney is wonderful as well as his staff. My leg feels wonderful after a procedure that relieved some awful varicose veins. High marks!

"Dr. Haney and his staff are great. "

I have had vein treatments at other places, but this is by far the best experience I've had. Dr. Haney was knowledgable and skilled in my treatment while also being incredibly caring and compassionate. All around, it was a wonderful experience and I'm so glad I went to the Ozark Vein Center.

– Beth Nardoni

"Top notch treatment"

Dr. Haney and his staff are the best. I have had an excellent outcome with my procedure with very little discomfort. The worst part is wearing the compression hose, but it's only for a short time! I will definitely recommend Dr. Haney to my friends and family!

– Julie R.

"Forever grateful!"

Staff and Dr. Haney are the best! I am definitely a fan of the practice and am amazed and the new services they offer. Had problems with the surface veins in both legs not working due to a genetic disorder. Dr. Haney and team were able to resolve my issues with little to no pain and time. I will forever be grateful for the work they did!❤️

" After 3 other vein specialists, Dr. Haney and staff made my decision easy."

The willingness to explain actions prior or the ability to take the time to explain through their responses to my questions was paramount to my decision to follow through with the actual procedures. I was made to feel comfortable, and not ashamed of my condition around personnel in the office. I enjoyed my visits, and actually looked forward to attending my appointments. Thank you very much to each and every one of you who worked on my case!

– Shawn T.

"Very attentive & professional"

Becky was always eager to explain and reassure. Appreciate her help.
