Uterine Fibroid Embolization in Rogers

Uterine Fibroid Embolization in Rogers, Arkansas

Pelvic & Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Embolization Therapy can be used in several different forms, but all are basically used to close or fill problematic blood vessels so they don't rupture.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization in Rogers is an effective, minimally invasive, non-surgical alternative to reduce all major symptoms of fibroids.

Uterine Fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) growths that develop within or on the muscular walls of the uterus. Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a safe, outpatient procedure with no restrictions. The embolization simply blocks the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink. In most cases, within 6 months 50% of the fibroids should be reduced, and 1 year post procedure, there's typically an 80% reduction, while an overall improvement of 90% is expected.

Arterial Embolizations are successfully used by our team to treat many different conditions including aneurysms, vascular abnormalities, and uterine fibroids.

While the goal of some vascular procedures is to open up the arteries or veins to promote blood flow, our team can use certain embolizations as a way to close off flow to particular veins or arteries that are causing harm.

Pelvic Venous Insufficiency affects female patients with pelvic veins that aren’t performing well. Varicose veins often arise in the pelvic region and can be very painful. A pelvic vein embolization can identify the problem causing veins and block blood flow to them.

Some people can be born with unique vein abnormalities that require an embolization, because it can cause pain in a centralized location. By diverting flow to healthy, normal vessels with a form of embolization therapy in Rogers, Arkansas patients – patients can find relief.

UFEs are the most common type of embolization Dr. Stout performs. We serve patients from all over Northwest Arkansas, including Bentonville, Springdale, Fayetteville, and beyond.

One Week Before Procedure

Consult with your provider in advance regarding any prescription blood thinners or any herbal or over the counter medications. They may need to be discontinued or changed prior to the procedure. You will need to have routine blood work tests performed 5 days prior to the procedure. We recommend you stop taking aspirin and vitamin E, 5 days before your UFE.

The Day of Procedure

We ask that you arrive with a driver, 30 minutes before your appointment to ensure all registration and health forms are complete and accurate. A staff member will escort you to your private room to change into a procedural gown. We will shave the insertion area if needed, and begin sedation with IV medication for your comfort.

During Your Procedure

Dr. Stout will view the target area with x-ray and ultrasound technology to ensure accuracy. Local anesthetic is given, then a tiny incision is made at the appropriate access point (radial or femoral), and a catheter is fed into the vein or artery to the ideal location. An x-ray (angiogram) if performed to provide a roadmap of the blood supply to the uterus and the fibroids. Once Dr. Stout confirms everything is in place, he injects tiny particles into the tube to stop the supply of blood to the arteries that are feeding the fibroid. These tiny particles cannot travel to any other part of the body. Once one side is completed, we will perform the same procedure to the other side of the uterus. The procedure itself lasts between 45 to 90 minutes.

Post-Procedure

In most instances you will need to lie still for several hours, so we will monitor you here during that process. To avoid complications, we will give you detailed instructions for when you can go home including rest suggestions, wound care, and any physical or rehab therapy if needed. A follow up appointment will be scheduled within 7-10 days following the procedure.
