The Process of Geniculate Artery Embolization

Geniculate artery embolization is a treatment designed to eliminate pain stemming from osteoarthritis. At Ozark Regional Vein & Artery Center, we do our best to offer noninvasive treatments that won’t keep you out of commission for long periods of time.

Geniculate artery embolization is a nonsurgical treatment designed to eliminate the flow of blood to knee joints affected by osteoarthritis. Embolization is a common treatment at ORVAC. This process involves intentionally blocking problematic arteries, reducing heavy blood flow to certain parts of the body. When blood is prohibited from reaching inflamed areas of the knee, the patient may notice a substantial reduction in pain.

The Consultation

Before you meet with our team for a geniculate artery embolization treatment, you’ll need to complete an initial consultation. This meeting will help us determine which of our many treatments is the right choice for you. The consultation allows us to form our own opinions about your current vascular condition. We will complete an exam so we can make note of any significant symptoms or characteristics. You can also expect a short round of questions. We’ll likely ask you about the timeline of your condition and how long you’ve been struggling with arthritis. We may also ask you about your medical history and your treatment goals. This meeting is all about getting on the same page with your provider. Once we have all the necessary information, we’ll schedule your treatment.

Pre-Treatment

There are some steps you can take to prepare for your geniculate artery embolization treatment to make things more convenient for yourself and your provider. Be open and honest with your provider when discussing the medications you’re currently taking. Some medications may affect how your body responds to treatment, and we never want to be taken by surprise. You will likely want to wear comfortable clothes on the day of your treatment. There’s no reason to be uncomfortable as you undergo your procedure. You should also arrive a few minutes early, so you have time to check in with your provider and ask any questions you may have about the treatment.

The Treatment

After you’re checked in and we’ve answered any final questions, we will bring you back to the treatment area. This treatment is not a fully invasive surgery, so you won’t need general anesthesia. Geniculate arterial embolization works by blocking blood flow into inflamed knee tissue. This is achieved by manually closing arteries in the leg. First, we will ensure that you’re relaxed and comfortable, then we will make a small incision in the thigh. Your provider will insert a catheter into the leg and snake it into the problematic artery.

The Treatment Pt. 2

Next, we’ll inject microscopic particles into the artery, which minimizes the intensity of the blood flow, thereby reducing the intensity of the pain. That’s all there is to it. In total, the procedure should only take an hour or two. One of the reasons we’ve started performing this procedure is the convenience of the patient. No one should have to upend their life to receive relief from osteoarthritis.

Post-Treatment

You will need to take some time to recover after your treatment is complete. While your results will not be immediate, you should notice pain relief soon. Many patients will experience an improvement in their symptoms within 1 to 2 weeks. We also recommend patients make some minor lifestyle changes in the weeks following their treatment. For instance, intensive exercise may negatively impact the healing process. Do your best to minimize intense physical activity for at least a week after your procedure. If you have any further questions about the recovery process, your provider can offer more detailed recommendations based on your specific condition.

Happy Clients

"Three minor surgical procedures later I feel like a new man."

I had some pretty serious vein issues that had been going on for 20 years due to a car accident when I was 17. Finally at age 49 I found Ozark Vein Clinic. Three minor surgical procedures later I feel like a new man. And my leg is on its way to being fully healed. I want to thank the staff for their friendly professionalism. And a special thank you to Dr. Haney and Dr. Jackie! - AJ G.

"No more swelled veins and no more aching pains from the swelling. Highly recommend."

Everyone in the office was kind and professional. I went in for a free evaluation. They found an issue that was causing swelled veins in my lower leg. I didn’t think I was in too much pain at the time. After my operations I realized just how much pain I’d been in prior to the operations. I really thought it was just how it was going to be as I got older. - Dan P.

" After 3 other vein specialists, Dr. Haney and staff made my decision easy."

The willingness to explain actions prior or the ability to take the time to explain through their responses to my questions was paramount to my decision to follow through with the actual procedures. I was made to feel comfortable, and not ashamed of my condition around personnel in the office. I enjoyed my visits, and actually looked forward to attending my appointments. Thank you very much to each and every one of you who worked on my case!

"The office staff are INCREDIBLE! They are efficient, but also kind and extremely helpful."

This is so rare anywhere these days! I noticed it the very first time i contacted them and it continues to be the service you receive. The only reason I put 4 stars and not 5, is that tomorrow is my actual procedure. But I feel confident that it will go well and a 5 star visit will persevere!!! The staff that did my evaluation and explained to treatment were wonderful. They use terminology that I could understand. Hopeful for positive results! - Jennifer S.
