What to Do After Sclerotherapy Treatments

Varicose veins are no fun. As if it weren’t hard enough to keep up appearances, now you have to worry about prominent, discolored veins. At Ozark Regional Vein and Artery Center, we understand how frustrating it can be to deal with varicose veins.

That’s why we’ve devoted our careers to performing cutting-edge cosmetic procedures like sclerotherapy, which is designed to address and eliminate prominent varicose veins. But we don’t stop once your treatment is completed.

We’ll also explain what to do after sclerotherapy, and how you can heal as effectively as possible. We want to keep you informed, so you can keep your body healthy.

The Ins and Outs of Sclerotherapy

Before we explain what to do after sclerotherapy, we need to give a quick overview of the procedure itself. Sclerotherapy works by injecting varicose veins in a specific, predetermined area. The sclerotherapy solution scars any problematic veins, which causes them to collapse.

The procedure is designed to be quick and painless, and you can go home immediately after the treatment is complete. Sclerotherapy is a no-frills process that can be completed over the course of a patient’s lunch break. Sclerotherapy is also noninvasive, so you won’t have to worry about stitches or bandages either.

Sclerotherapy Recovery

The recovery time following sclerotherapy is minimal. After the procedure, the body will begin to absorb the scarred and collapsed varicose veins. Though a vein collapse may seem like a serious medical concern, there’s nothing to be worried about; your body knows how to handle this!

The collapsed veins will be absorbed over time, and in the process, blood flow will be diverted to healthier veins. It may take a short while for you to see the results (at most, a couple of months), but eventually, your body can eliminate your varicose veins completely. You could forget they were ever there in the first place.

Be Vigilant!

As your treatment area heals, you’ll need to nurture it to ensure that the veins are absorbed and the blood flow is effectively redistributed. You’ll want to avoid:

  • Strenuous exercise
  • Long flights
  • Sunbathing
  • Saunas or hot tubs

After 72 hours, you should be able to resume your schedule as normal. But for those three days, try to prioritize your treatment area. You don’t want to invite any potentially dangerous side effects, such as blood clots. You should, however, walk when possible. You don’t want to do anything that will really work up a sweat, but just keep the blood moving.

Sunscreen Is a Must

The body needs the sun to stay healthy, but for the first two weeks after a sclerotherapy treatment, you should try to limit your time in the sunshine. Too much time in the sun after your procedure could cause dark spots, which can detract from your newly repaired complexion.

Though, of course, there will be times you’ll have to go outside, so when this happens, don’t forget the sunscreen. Your sunscreen should be at least SPF 30 for the best results. Your skin is a vital part of your biology—don’t neglect it!
