What to Know About Prior Authorization

For those seeking vein treatment, prior authorization can be a frustrating roadblock. At Ozark Regional Vein & Artery Center, we understand that our patients just want to feel better and not constantly jump through hoops in order to get the care they deserve.

With that in mind, we want to go over a consistent thorn for our patients seeking care: prior authorization.

What is Prior Authorization?

Some insurances require prior authorization before treatment, which means they’re looking for criteria to meet medical necessity for vein treatment. This goes back to what we’ve talked about previously with classifications, and the fact that you must reach a certain classification before they can cover you.

This can cause frustration among our patients. This is because prior authorizations can have vastly varying timelines for approval. At times, prior authorizations can take anywhere from two to three days. Other times, it can be two to three months.

How to Prepare Yourself

On top of that, there’s the issue of conservative measures. Conservative measures are the steps that patients take outside of our office in order to improve their vein conditions. Some of these include a healthy diet, exercise, leg elevation, and more.

Some insurances require three months of conservative treatment before giving prior authorization. Unfortunately, because of this, you may need to look ahead six months before you think you want to get treatment. Some insurance providers also require patients to wear compression stockings prior to their evaluation.

Make sure that you’re aware of any requirements from your insurance company and that you follow these requirements in order to best help yourself during this process. If you’re considering treatment for your vein issues, we recommend beginning preparation at least six months in advance.
