Spider veins are a type of varicose vein that present a characteristic spider-web appearance visible through the surface of the skin. Varicose veins are a type of faulty blood vessel that have dysfunctional one-way valves. These valves should keep blood flowing toward the heart, but in spider veins they allow blood to return and pool within the dysfunctional vein. They are normally harmless, but if you have them, you are probably looking for a spider vein treatment for this unattractive condition.
Sclerotherapy is a safe medical procedure that has been used for decades for the removal of spider veins. We use a special solution and inject it into your veins to cause the vein walls to collapse and be absorbed by your body. The blood that was in the vein will be transported using healthy veins nearby. If a vein would make a good donor for a future heart transplant, it cannot be considered for this treatment.
You can have your sclerotherapy procedure performed at our office without a requirement for hospitalization. The procedure should take under an hour to perform. The number of spider veins requiring injection in one treatment session is dependent upon the size and location of the problem veins and your overall medical condition.
To make a good candidate for the procedure, the treatment area must be in good overall health. You should inform us of any medications that you are currently taking that may interfere with your treatment or recovery, including nutritional supplements and herbs.
Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT)
An EVLT procedure is performed as a spider vein treatment typically when symptoms are present. We make a very small opening near the problem vein and transmit thermal energy into the walls of the dysfunctional vein. This causes the collapse of the vein walls and eventual absorption by your body. The blood that once flowed through the dysfunctional vein will be rerouted into nearby blood vessels. You should be able to resume your normal activities right after your treatment without hospitalization. After your procedure, we may recommend that you wear compression garments to assist in circulation.
