Guide to Postpartum Vein Treatments in Rogers

Pregnancy is an incredibly meaningful, fulfilling, and beautiful experience for many women. But as your body goes through changes, it can complicate your venous health. The Ozark Regional Vein & Artery Center is here to provide support to women looking for more information about their vascular health post-pregnancy. From how pregnancy can impact your vascular health to what treatments you should consider for tackling postpartum varicose veins, we’re the authority on all things venous health.

Here is everything you need to know about postpartum vein treatments in Rogers!

The Impact of Pregnancy

We doubt we’re surprising you when we say that pregnancy can change your body. One way it can impact your physical wellbeing is through your vascular system. As your pregnancy progresses, the amount of blood pumping through your veins progressively increases to support you and your baby. This increase in blood volume can put more pressure on your blood vessels, especially those in your legs.

This is significant because even before pregnancy, the blood vessels in your legs are working overtime. After all, they’re constantly pumping against gravity to keep blood flowing back towards the heart.

During pregnancy, physical changes can come together to compromise this system. The extra weight your body needs, the pressure from internal shifting as your uterus grows, and the increase of the hormone progesterone—which can relax or overly dilate blood vessels—can combine to weaken blood flow. This results in large, swollen, and painful varicose veins.

Treatment options

When venous health issues arise during pregnancy, we encourage most women to begin recovery with self-care techniques. We recommend use of compression stockings, regular exercise, and losing weight. If you’re interested, we also have a great blog discussing conservative care tips for varicose veins after pregnancy.

We recommend waiting 3 months following the end of your pregnancy before pursuing minimally-invasive vein treatments. After all, we want to provide your body’s natural processes time to normalize. Frequently, conservative care takes a little while to show results, or the body can naturally heal itself as your hormones and weight return to pre-pregnancy levels. But sometimes, these strategies can’t resolve the issue, and treatment becomes the necessary next step.

The 2 procedures we recommend for women looking for postpartum vein treatments are sclerotherapy and vein ablation.

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a procedure that has been used for decades and involves using a tiny and incredibly precise needle to inject an FDA-approved solution (either Asclera or Sotradecol) into veins.

As the solution spreads through the vein, it causes vein walls to swell, stick together, and seal shut. The veins then become scar tissue that the body will reabsorb. After it’s all said and done, veins begin to fade and permanently disappear.

What is radiofrequency vein ablation?

Radiofrequency Ablation is both safe and highly effective, using radiofrequency energy to heat and treat the problematic vein.

After applying a local anesthetic, your provider uses ultrasound guidance to insert a tiny catheter into the treatment area. Once in the area, the heat energy from radiofrequency fiber will cause the vein walls to collapse and close. You’ll need to wear compression stockings for a doctor-recommended amount of time following the treatment.
