Ambulatory phlebectomy is a procedure that is done for the removal of varicose veins. It requires very small incisions, which are so small that stitches will not be necessary afterwards. The purpose of the incisions is to give the medical professional access to the vein that is being removed. A special tool will then be used to skillfully and carefully remove the vein through the tiny openings.
Since the veins that are being removed collapse during the process, even fairly large ones can usually be removed with ambulatory phlebectomy. This makes the procedure much less invasive than traditional vein stripping surgery.
Before your ambulatory phlebectomy procedure is performed, we will mark the location of the targeted veins. A local anesthetic will be used so you will not feel any discomfort during the procedure. In addition to the numbing effects, the medicine used will help to separate the veins from surrounding tissue in order to make them easier to remove. It will also constrict the capillaries, leading to additional benefits.
Upon completion of the procedure, the patient can resume most regular activities immediately. There is virtually no downtime involved, making ambulatory phlebectomy an extremely convenient treatment for people with busy schedules and lifestyles. You should expect to wear compression stockings for a set amount of time to promote healing.
Walking actually helps the healing process. The contraction of muscles that is necessary for walking will help to disperse fluid that might otherwise gather around the area of treatment. Walking will also help to minimize the chances of a blood clot and other complications.
